In order to monitor the progress made on the Sustainable Development Goals promoted by the 2030 Agenda, the National Statistics Institute (INE) released data that allow us to make "a statistical reading of national performance" between the years 2015 and 2022.Regarding poverty, the Autonomous Region of the Azores recorded the second highest risk rate in 2021, with 25.1%, only surpassed by the Autonomous Region of Madeira, which reached 25.9%.These data make the Azores the Portuguese region that "most reduced this rate", with a difference of 6.5 percentage points compared to 2017, when the at-risk-of-poverty rate was 31.6%.Nationwide, INE points out, 16.4% of people were at risk of poverty in 2021, a percentage that reflects a decrease of 2.0 when compared to the year 2020.As far as nutrition is concerned, the Azores stand out as the region with the highest level of moderate and/or severe food insecurity, with an estimated 22.8% of the Azorean population suffering from obesity problems. Second on this list is Alentejo, where it is estimated that 18.4% of the population suffers from some type of obesity. In a more general panorama, in 2022, the INE report states, about 4.1% of the resident population in Portugal was moderately and/or severely food insecure, and it is estimated that at least 1.5 million people aged 18 or older were obese. Analyzing maternal and infant mortality, which in 2020 stood at 20.1 per 100,000 live births, the Azores archipelago registered one of the lowest values when compared to the national average, with 2.4‰ (permillage), surpassed by the North Region, with 2.7‰.Regarding the prevention and treatment of substance abuse, in 2019, it was in the Autonomous Region of the Azores that the highest prevalence of smokers was observed: 23.4% of the total population. As for indicators related to sexual health, it is noticeable that the adolescent fertility rate in Portugal follows a downward trend. However, it is higher in the Autonomous Region of the Azores, with a rate above 11‰, and it should also be noted that in the Azores archipelago the proportion of modern contraception methods is less than 50% among women of reproductive age (between 15 and 49 years old). With regard to education, taking into account the elementary school completion rate, INE states that, between 2014 and 2015, the Autonomous Region of the Azores had the lowest rate in the country, with 88.1%. In the years 2020/2021, the lowest rate in the country is still centered in the Azores, although with an increase of 5.3 percentage points, standing at 93.6%.In what concerns the completion rate of secondary education in the Azores archipelago, data from the statistics office show that in the 2014/2015 school year this percentage was 75.9%, the lowest nation-wise, rising to 87.2% in the 2020/2021 school year, reflecting an increase of more than 12%, although it remains the lowest rate in the whole country for the period under analysis. In the parameter related to policies for greater equality, data released by the National Institute of Statistics points out that in Portugal there was an increasing trend in the proportion of labor in the Gross Domestic Product between the years 2015 and 2021, with a more pronounced growth between 2019 and 2020. In the case of the Autonomous Region of the Azores, INE only adds that it equaled the national average value. With regard to sustainable waste management, although the Alentejo region has recorded the highest recycling rate, with 51.0% between 2015 and 2020, "most regions have made progress, especially the Autonomous Region of the Azores, with a more pronounced increase" of 18.6%, from 24.4% in 2015 to 43.0% in 2020.
